FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SNAKES

Common questions that I get asked as Melbourne's snake catcher and snake handler when I go out to different places are the following. If your question is not answered here, be sure to give us a call on 0403 875 409 or you can send us an email through our contact page.

ARE ALL MELBOURNE'S SNAKES VENOMOUS?

All of Melbourne's snakes are venomous however to different degrees. While for example the little whip or white lipped snake are not considered a major threat, they still contain venom. The eastern tiger snake and eastern brown snake are extremely venomous and their bites can kill very quickly.

WHAT IS A SNAKE CATCHER?

As a snake catcher and handler, I attend your premises (home, school, business etc) and locate a snake and safely capture and remove it. The snake is then checked to ensure it is healthy and happy and is released back into the wild safely away from people and pets.

When I attend your premises, I can also provide some information relating to snakes, snake bites, preventing snakes from entering your homes and answer any specific questions you may have.

IS THERE A FEE FOR A SNAKE CATCHER?

There is a one off call out fee to attend the premises. This covers insurance, searching for the snake, capturing it, handling it, removing and relocating the snake. It also covers time time for this professional job, fuel and travel expenses as well as the risks associated with job.

Our fee is similar to a plumber's call out fee during the day and there are no hidden expenses. Additional fees only apply if there is more than 1 snake on the premises or it takes more than 1 hour to capture the snake.

CAN I JUST KILL THE SNAKE?

In the state of Victoria, it is illegal to kill a snake. They are considered a protected species in accordance with The Wildlife Act and there are severe penalties which can apply if you attempt to handle or kill a snake without an appropriate government license.  This law benefits animals as well as humans because if you leave a snake alone,  you are less likely to die from a snake bite.
